“Gladdie” Character Doll by Helen Jensen, Circa 1929
This darling character girl was sculpted by American artist Helen Jensen and made in Germany, circa 1929. Features include a cold-painted bisque head with wonderful character modeling, full cheeks, a snub nose, brown sleep eyes with delicate shading and a delightful grin exposing a solidly molded top row of teeth and vividly painted lips and tongue.
Her molded and painted hair is styled in a wavy cropped style and topped with a wool felt cloche hat in marine blue (some fading to hat.) Her body features a solidly stuffed cotton torso and jointed composition arms and legs that have been refinished (left leg presents finish loss and a crack at the top front of left leg.)
This impish little one wears a 1920’s style ensemble featuring a colorful geometric pattern and including a short, pleated dress and coat. Underneath, she wears a fine cotton all-in-one. Tan stockings and brown leather one-strap shoes couple her classic presentation.
