Housed in a high-quality French trunk that bears an engraved oval brass plate featuring the name of the resident, Heléne, is the original trousseau for the doll herself, an early poupee that we attribute to the François Gaultier firm.
Details of Heléne, who stands 13-1/2" tall, include a perfect bisque shoulderhead impressed '0" low on the plate in front, very nice coloring and painting, pierced ears, and a light brown mohair wig attached to the cork pate.
On a classic gusseted leather body, it remains in very good condition, save for some rust upon the wrists and fingers, as well as the loss of the pinky finger on the left hand.
Obviously, what is most remarkable about this petite beauty is the fact that she has managed to keep her original trousseau with her for these last 150 plus years.
The enfantine-era trousseau is not large, but it does represent quality work. Included are white cotton undergarments that include a hard to find original crinoline, plus five complete outfits. Note that some of the woolen pieces present scattered tender areas and areas of loss. The garments, and their classic lines, do provide an opportunity for the sewer out there to create even more choices for Hiléne however. Additional items include a hat box, two hats, a pair of shoes and a single shoe, plus a wooden chair and a bidet.
The painted wood trunk is of very good quality, features a brilliant green paper interior and possesses a retailer's label that denotes it being originally offered for sale in Brussels, Belgium.
