We don't know about you, but we would love to stumble upon a touristy souvenir shop that still offered shelves of dolls like the one shown here, because most likely, this charming doll originally retailed at just such a shop.
A lovely poupee from François Gaultier, this example features a perfect bisque head, big blue paperweight eyes, pierced ears with one original earring. There is no wig visible as the head dress covers the entire head.
On a gusseted leather body in what we assume to be good condition, there is a loss to a small part of a finger on the left hand, and minor rust stains to a few of the other individually wired fingers.
She wears her original French regional costume which consists of a blue and cream striped wool dress, a marvelous woven silk apron that features silver metallic threads, and a very unusual metal head dress worn with a black wool scarf. Original cotton stockings and wooden clogs upon her feet hint at her rural village origins. We love to use these charming dolls in a kitchen or other domestic scene - hard at work at the wood-fired range, for example!
