Early Taufling as Baby
Early Taufling as Baby
This darling Mottschmann Baby is going to grow up to be a real character – you can just see it in his face! This papier-mache charmer, circa 1860, was produced in Sonneberg, Germany, but inspired by ancient Japanese doll designs. Details include great color, delicately painted facial features, inset glass pupil-less eyes, and painted tufts of brown hair just above the ears and at the nape of the neck.
The beautifully designed body is of wood and composition components joined by cotton, and bears what are commonly referred to as floating joints. In the tummy section is a squeaker, and it is operable by pressing down upon it. This one still works!
Beautifully costumed as an infant in a white cotton gown with a fine bonnet, this fellow will work beautifully in an early dollhouse or scene, perhaps happily reclining in a cradle, or standing in a minder.
Wherever you choose to display him, one thing is certain – a glance at him will make you smile.
