Boxed Paper Doll Set
Boxed Paper Doll Set
We are pleased to offer a stunning paper doll set in its original box, circa 1870s. This set would have kept a young girl engrossed for hours while subtly teaching her the proper attire for various occasions. The carton box features vivid “Huret” green paper, an embossed gilt border with a thousand stars pattern and an oval portrait of two well-dressed ladies.
The interior of the box features eight compartments lined in tissue and filled with the paper dolls and their costumes. A past owner has bestowed each female doll with a name (Gabrielle, Louise, Virginia etc.), some with a title such as “Duchess” and ages ranging from 23 to 95 “Ans,” inscribed in a delicate pencil script. There are sixteen costumes total including a tea dress, ball gowns, mourning garb, fancy dress costumes, walking suits, and a travel costume.
It is a wonder that this piece of ephemera has survived the years, and it remains a time capsule of historic fashion and an intriguing window into the lives of Victorian girls. The set is in beautiful, gently played with condition with minor age-related wear.
Includes: 8 paper dolls (including one boy) and 16 costumes.
