"Julia Cary" = a Greiner Papier-Mache with Provenance

$1,295.00

Here we have a papier-mache Greiner example with a wonderful patina, charm to spare and a fascinating, historic provenance. Standing twenty one inches tall, this shoulderhead example features niceley molded and painted features with black eyes, full lashes and pink painted lips. Her molded and painted black hair is styled into sausage curls (age related wear, crazing and paint loss to face, hair and shoulders.) She is on a cloth body with mitt style hands and “hinged” knees and hips (body does present age related discoloration and a nicely sewn patch to lower right arm.) Her beautifully sewn two piece costume is composed of printed cotton in a pattern of white coral branches on a field of age softened red and features a full skirt and sleeves and a ruched bust and (costume does present age related fading, scattered holes and areas of mending.) Antique cotton underthings (which do present age related discoloration), stockings and black leather shoes complete her look.
A note included with the doll states that her name is “Julia Cary” and was given to a Miss Elizabeth Cary on Christmas day 1860 by former first lady Mrs. Julia Tyler, wife of the tenth President of the United States, John Tyler.
Lower back of shoulderplate retains a worn “Patent Head” label.
