Exquisitely Enameled Bird Box
Exquisitely Enameled Bird Box
If this exquisitely enameled box alone was not enough to attract your attention, know that there is more than meets the eye here. Push the release on the front of the engraved gilt brass box and you will release a tiny, red-feathered bird as the oval lid up top opens, and the birds pops up to sing a tune for you, all the while moving side to side upon his axis, flapping his wings and opening and closing his tiny beak. When he has finished his tune, he pops back down, disappearing from you as the oval lid closes behind him. Known to collectors simply as “bird boxes,” this particular one is a treasure. Of German manufacture, circa mid-twentieth century and marked “EB” in an oval, it remains in good working condition. The only issue is that when the power is low, the lid does not always clear the bird and it remains partially open. When at full power everything works as it should. The box is wound from below and does come with a key, but it is not the original one.
